How Bald Head Island, NC Strengthens Short-Term Rental Compliance

Bald Head Island is a small island off the coast of North Carolina. We have a year-round population of about 400, and we have about 1,400 properties on the island. It’s a tourist destination. People come annually. We see a peak volume of visitors of about 10,000 in the summertime. 

We started reviewing options for technology vendors in July of 2022. The goal is to ultimately be able to allow staff to better utilize the short-term rental technology that’s out there, to be able to increase occupancy tax collections and short-term compliance. 

When researching companies to work with regarding short-term rentals and compliance, they need to look at what’s best for their individual organization and what provider is going to work with them to meet the needs that they’re looking for. So we decided to go with Neumo because it had everything that we were looking for. Short-term rental compliance, short-term rental identification, as well as tax payment collections, and tax remittances.

Staff is excited about it. They enjoy the module and utilizing it daily, as well as researching properties that are out there that could be renting and helping to educate property owners on the regulations that are there.
